The Qutb Minar and its Monuments complex brings together the minar and several other historic structures. UNESCO inscribed the complex on its World Heritage List in 1993 under criterion (iv).

The minar was built between 1199 and 1503, with Qutb ud din Aibak and Shamsu’d-Din Iltutmish among the rulers associated with its construction. It measures 72.5 metres high, tapering from a diameter of 14.32 metres at the base to 2.75 metres at the top.

Among the complex’s other landmarks are the Quwwatu’l-Islam Mosque, Alai Darwaza, Iltutmish’s tomb, the Iron Pillar and the unfinished Alai Minar. India’s Ministry of Culture describes the Quwwatu’l-Islam Mosque as the oldest mosque in northern India.

Alai Darwaza dates to 1311, while the first storey of Alai Minar stands 25 metres high. The plan was for Alai Minar to be twice the scale of Qutb Minar.

The metro journey from Karol Bagh station to Qutab Minar station takes 39 minutes on the route shown by the Delhi Metro App: take the Blue Line to Rajiv Chowk, then change to the Yellow Line toward Huda City Centre.

Check the DMRC journey planner and fare calculator when planning your trip, and leave room for the final leg.

If you are arranging your stay in Karol Bagh, the hotel’s room options are available to view.

How much time should you allow for the monument and grounds?

How much time should you allow for the monument and grounds?

Plan time for both Qutb Minar and the other structures in the complex: the mosque, Alai Darwaza, Iltutmish’s tomb, the Iron Pillar and the unfinished Alai Minar. The grounds bring these features together, so you can take them in as part of one visit rather than treating the tower as the only stop.

The complex’s architectural details span different stages of its history, including Alai Darwaza, built in 1311, and Alai Minar, which was left unfinished. Follow the designated paths as you move between structures; ASI guidance also asks visitors to stay out of restricted or cordoned-off areas.

Follow the site’s filming and videography rules, avoid photography in restricted areas marked for sensitive artworks or artifacts, and keep noise down in areas used for customary practices.

What can you pair with a visit to Qutab Minar?

Qutab Minar’s many structures give the visit a clear focus within the complex itself. If you are planning a fuller day across Delhi, decide on the rest of your route before you set out; a one-day Delhi route starting in Karol Bagh can help you think through that broader itinerary.
